Wellness & Healing
When you hear the word “Wellness” you might think about meditation, going to a doctor, or going to a spa. However, when I mention the word “Wellness” I use the following definition. Wellness: using safe and positive elements in your life to create a sense of positivity and refreshment!
These might be elements that you already know are effective for your mental, physical, and emotional health. But they might also be things that you haven’t tried yet. This is important, because if you are in a place where you aren’t feeling a sense of wellness, then you either aren’t doing enough of the things that work for you, OR haven’t found what works for you yet!
It sounds simple, but this actually took me quite some time to figure out. It all happened when my stress and anxiety became so overwhelming that I could barely leave my house. I saw doctors and took medication. But the thing that started actually helping the most was training myself to do something that sounds incredibly simple, yet it was VERY difficult for me….just being still in mind and body….just learning to sit and exist without having any motives other than my own healing!
Again, that might sound like a super easy and pretty obvious thing, but it was incredibly challenging for me. I started out by listening to some encouraging music and trying to be able to sit and just exist and be present with the world around me for the length of the song. Again, it took a while. But eventually, I was able to make it through one song. Then as time went on, I was able to make it through two songs, and so on.
This process of simply sitting and letting myself be still, was my first step to healing. The Bible verse “Be still and know that I am God,” had a new meaning for me. I broke this verse apart and felt that its meaning made sense to me. “Be Still and know that the God of the Universe has everything under control!”
I am not trying to preach or push one faith over another. Each person must find their own version of their “faith” and make time to connect with the “Source” of that faith. I went through a time of researching many religions and philosophies and in my opinion it all boils down to that.
The moral of this story is to simply find what works for you (meditation, yoga, working out, journaling, body work, spending time with family, spending time alone, going to a religious organization, etc.) and create a space for yourself where you feel energized instead of drained.
When I was at the beginning of this stage, I would tell my husband that I felt like a dried up dish sponge…that I had nothing left to give. So your task is to find safe and positive elements in your life to refill your emotional reserves. It might not happen overnight, but when you make moves toward your wellness and healing, everyone in your life benefits!
Bottom Line: Make YOUR wellness and healing a top priority! There are no excuses (I should know, I used them all)! You can figure out a way, no matter what your circumstances are, to give yourself time for your own wellness and healing! If you aren’t well, you aren’t able to help your family and others around you!
